On 7 February 2016, Algeria’s Parliament approved several amendments to the constitution (499 in favor, 2 against and 16 abstentions).

Under the revised constitution, the president is restricted to two terms, thereby reversing a move taken in 2008 that enabled the current President Bouteflika to stand for re-election. In addition, the Berber language Tamazight has been recognized as one of the country’s official idioms.
