Last February, the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China passed a law on deep seafloor resource exploration.

The website of the National People’s Congress highlights that the law aims to protect maritime environment and ensure sustainable exploitation in light with China’s international commitments.

China is indeed a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which states that international seabeds and their resources are the common property of mankind. The Law further aims to support research and surveys while also protecting any relics or objects found during exploration.
